Accident:
Occurred at 1:15 PM (7/9) – Harvard St./Beacon St.
A cyclist came to the station to report being hit by a car, but was not seriously hurt. The driver gave him some money and a phone number and told him to contact him if he needed more money. The cyclist decided to contact him, but the phone number was wrong. He recorded the license plate number however, so the department is continuing the investigation.
Arrest:
Occurred at 12:15 AM (7/11) – Pine Manor College
Officers responded for a reported assault. The victim stated he had thrown a cup of water at the suspect, who was his classmate, and the suspect then threw a rock at him that struck his head. When questioned, the suspect confirmed this series of events. He was placed under arrest for Assault and Battery by means of a Dangerous Weapon.
Occurred at 7:10 AM (7/9) – Cypress St./Boylston St.
An officer observed a driver make a right turn on a red light where a “No Turn on Red” sign was posted. The driver was pulled over and the officer asked for his license and registration. The driver did not produce a license, and the RMV had no record of him having a license. He was placed under arrest. Inventory of his property revealed a wallet belonging to a second person, as well as a passport belonging to a third person. Follow up is being conducted by the department.

Officers responded to a bank in the area to arrest a suspect in an ongoing forgery investigation. The suspect had opened a bank account and was depositing bad checks in it. She was then withdrawing the amount she had deposited before the bank was alerted that these were bad checks. As a result, she made out with a large sum of money. The Brookline Police Department was alerted, and surveillance commenced. When the suspect returned to the bank on 7/8, the police were able to make an arrest for Uttering Fraudulent Checks, Larceny, and Attempted Larceny.
Burglary/Larceny:
Occurred at 8:30 PM (7/10) – Harvard St./Washington St.
A bicycle was reported stolen from the area between 7 and 8:30 PM. It’s described as a gray/tan Trek mountain bike worth $500-$1000.
Occurred at 8:57 AM (7/10) – Norfolk Rd.
Officers responded to the area for a report of larceny. 2 cast iron planters were stolen, weighing between 75 and 100 pounds each, sometime in the night. Officers are continuing the investigation.
Occurred at 12:43 PM (7/8) – Lyman Rd.
Officers responded to the area for a report of larceny. The victim had three Hosta shrubs, and two flowering bushes, which were dug up in the night and taken. The shrubs and bushes together are valued at over $2000.
Occurred at 11:35 AM (7/8) – Longwood Ave./Kent St.
Officers responded to the area for a reported past larceny. FedEx had delivered a package to the victim’s apartment building, which the concierge kept in an unlocked storage room behind the front desk. When the victim went to retrieve it the next day, it was missing. An investigation is continuing.
Robbery:
Occurred at 3:57 PM (7/10) – Strathmore Rd.
Officers reported to the area for a report of armed robbery with a knife. The victim parked his vehicle on Strathmore Road, and 2 black males approached. One was wielding a knife, cut the victim with the knife on his hand, and ordered him not to move. The other reached in his passenger side window and grabbed his backpack. They fled down the street and jumped into a motor vehicle, possibly a Honda or Toyota, which was tan/sand colored. The victim attempted to pursue the suspects but crashed his own vehicle.
Suspect # 1 (who came to the driver's side window) was described as a black male, late 20's, short hair, 5'8-5'9", thin build, wearing baggy blue jeans, a white t-shirt, and sneakers. The knife was described as a 4-5 inch, silver, straight edged blade.
Suspect # 2 (who came to the front passenger window) was described as a dark skinned black male, early-mid 20's, 5'10", chubby build, wearing dark blue shorts, white t-shirt, sneakers.
The investigation is ongoing.

Burglary/Larceny:
Occurred at 5:30 AM (7/8) – Devotion School
Officers responded to a report of larceny of a backpack in the area. A male was sleeping on a bench in front of the school between 3:30 AM and 5:30 AM and when he awoke, he discovered his backpack missing. Some of the missing items were recovered nearby.

When she passed the park, a male approached her from behind and grabbed her purse, which she was able to hold on to. An officer reported observing a teenage boy walking along Washington Street carrying a red Roadmaster men’s bicycle. The boy then left the bicycle at the corner and walked away. The officer took the bicycle in for safe keeping. There were no reports of a similar bicycle stolen recently.

Officers responded to the area for a report of a larceny of a purse. The victim placed her wallet on the window ledge of a store and bent to the sidewalk to tie her shoe. When she rose, her wallet was gone, which contained a cell phone, credit cards, and large amount of money. She described a male standing nearby, who was gone when she rose.

Officers responded to the area for a report of larceny of a scooter. The victim had parked it the night before and locked only the steering wheel. The scooter was described as an orange Buddy 125. No suspicious activity was reported in the area by neighbors of the victim.

An officer observed a vehicle run the red light on St. Paul St. The officer conducted a traffic stop, and the driver of the vehicle produced the registration of the vehicle as well as a foreign passport. When asked for his license he stated he had a foreign license as well. When the officer ran his information, he discovered warrants for the driver’s arrest for incidents in Somerville. He received citations for the traffic offenses, and was placed under arrest for the warrants.

A driver and her passenger reported a threat which had occurred to them while driving on Boylston. The driver stated she was traveling in the left lane when a vehicle came up close behind her and kept trying to pass her in the right lane. After coming up next to her, the driver of the other vehicle began shouting and yelling, and at a stop light got out of his car and continued to verbally assault them. Police officers began investigating after following up on the license plate number the victims were able to provide.

Officers responded to a report of breaking and entering in the area. The victims left their residence at 8 AM and returned at 5:30 PM and did not notice anything wrong at first, as their dead bolt was still secured. They then noticed several expensive items missing. The scene was processed and officers are continuing their investigation.

The victim had been away from his apartment from 7/1, and returned yesterday evening to discover the apartment broken into and several items in disarray. Several expensive items were reported missing, and the suspect had gained access by using tools to pry the front door open. Other residents of the building reported seeing a large package outside the victim’s door on Saturday morning, and this package was found inside his apartment. The scene was processed and officers are continuing their investigation.

A bicycle was reported stolen sometime between 5:00 PM on 7/4 and 8:00 AM on 7/5 from the foyer of the victim’s residence. The bike was described as a GT Timberline All Terra Mountain Bike.

Several units were dispatched to the area for a 2-alarm kitchen fire. The cause of the fire was thought to be due to combustibles being too close to the flame from the stove. There were no reported injuries.

Officers responded to a motor vehicle crash on Aspinwall Ave. One of the drivers was occupied with his GPS system and failed to stop at the red light, causing damage to the other driver’s side door. The first driver was issued a citation for a red light violation.

Officers responded to a 3-car MV crash. The operator of one of the vehicles reported she was struck from behind by a man driving a black motor vehicle who fled from the scene. The momentum from this crash caused her to strike the vehicle in front of her, which struck the vehicle in front of it. Officers observed the front of her vehicle had extensive damage, while the rear had minor scratches. The driver of the second vehicle reported that the driver of the first vehicle had come up behind her very fast and had struck her vehicle. She did not observe anyone fleeing the scene. The driver of the third vehicle reported being struck by the second, and this driver also did not observe anyone fleeing the scene. The officer issued the first driver a citation for failure to use care while stopping, and placed her under arrest for an outstanding warrant from the Cambridge District Court.
Occurred at 4:17 AM (7/3) – Harvard St./Fuller St.
An officer observed a motor vehicle traveling on Harvard St. without headlights on, which were required at that time of night. A motor vehicle stop was conducted. An odor of alcoholic beverage emanated from the vehicle, and the driver’s eyes appeared glassy and bloodshot. Upon inquiry, the driver stated that he had been drinking that evening. After further investigation, he was placed under arrest.

Officers responded to the area for a report of a motor vehicle accident involving an injured pedestrian. The driver claimed to have been operating the vehicle at a slow speed, when the victim ran out in front, causing the accident. When speaking with the driver, the officer reported a strong odor of marijuana emanating from his person. He was asked if he had smoked marijuana today and if he was in possession, and he stated he had been smoking, and that he had some marijuana in his jacket pocket. He was arrested at this time, and the marijuana was located. After observing other physical signs from the driver, the officer believed the driver’s ability to safely operate his vehicle had been impaired, leading to the charge of Operation Under the Influence of Drugs.

An officer observed a person who is known to the department from previous interactions and has 3 active warrants. He also has a stay-away from Brookline order as a condition of his probation. The officer parked his vehicle and approached the individual on foot, and a pursuit ensued on Washington Street. Several officers were dispatched at this time as the individual continued to give chase. The individual jumped over a fence into a backyard of an apartment building, where the officers were able to apprehend him. He is being charged with Disorderly Conduct and Resisting Arrest, in addition to his outstanding warrants.

A bicycle was reported stolen from the area, and it was last seen on 6/13. It’s a custom made GT BMX bike that was chrome in color, and the spokes are chrome as well.

Officers reported to a residence for an attempted Breaking and Entering. The homeowners showed the officers a side door which had been damaged during the attempt. Police are investigating.

A black Treck women’s mountain bike, valued at $800, was last seen on 6/27 and was reported missing on 6/30 from the victim’s garage.

The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for operating after suspension and defective equipment.

Officers conducted a search of the area but could not identify the suspect.

Press Release: Elderly Scam
Brookline Police Department Scam Warning- Advanced Fee Fraud
On June 17th, 2011, the Brookline Police Department was made aware of one known elderly Brookline resident who had fallen victim to an “inheritance” scam, with a very large monetary loss from their personal bank accounts. The scam began with initial contact being conducted through paper mail by an unknown party who represented themselves as an employee of an international financial company. This party advised the now “victim” that they were the next of kin in a dormant account held by this financial institution in the name of a family member and provided a copy of a death certificate. A total of 7 wire transfers were conducted, all over $10,000. These amounts were described as necessary “fees” or “value added taxes.” Documents such as “applications to transfer funds” are provided and made to appear to be legitimate, yet have no legal significance. All advance fee scams share one basic thing in common- they require the victim to give something now in order to secure a right to something relatively large in the future. The people behind the scams often attempt to mimic government documents or emails, legitimate corporations, popular websites and the like. Another popular scam includes the sending of false insurance checks with letter from prominent companies claiming bigger settlement is on the horizon only after depositing the initial payment.
Prevention Tips:
Learn to recognize the signs of advance fee fraud:
-Payment is requested in advance
-Payment is much smaller than the promises payoff- almost incidental
Signs of email frauds in general:
-The email is unsolicited
-The tone, grammar, and overall style of the emails are noticeably less polished and professional than expected from a reputable, established corporation
-The offer seems to good too be true
-The situation described seems bizarre or unlikely
What to do if you think an offer matching any of these characteristics might be genuine:
-Contact the Better Business Bureau to investigate the company
-If the company seems legitimate, look up the company’s phone number in a phone book (do not use contact information given to you in the email!) and call to verify
-Have the company send you relevant documentation to verify the offer through the mail
-Verify the information independently
What to do if you believe that you may have fallen prey to an advance fee fraud:
-Contact your bank immediately
-Notify the Police Department
On June 17th, 2011, the Brookline Police Department was made aware of one known elderly Brookline resident who had fallen victim to an “inheritance” scam, with a very large monetary loss from their personal bank accounts. The scam began with initial contact being conducted through paper mail by an unknown party who represented themselves as an employee of an international financial company. This party advised the now “victim” that they were the next of kin in a dormant account held by this financial institution in the name of a family member and provided a copy of a death certificate. A total of 7 wire transfers were conducted, all over $10,000. These amounts were described as necessary “fees” or “value added taxes.” Documents such as “applications to transfer funds” are provided and made to appear to be legitimate, yet have no legal significance. All advance fee scams share one basic thing in common- they require the victim to give something now in order to secure a right to something relatively large in the future. The people behind the scams often attempt to mimic government documents or emails, legitimate corporations, popular websites and the like. Another popular scam includes the sending of false insurance checks with letter from prominent companies claiming bigger settlement is on the horizon only after depositing the initial payment.
Prevention Tips:
Learn to recognize the signs of advance fee fraud:
-Payment is requested in advance
-Payment is much smaller than the promises payoff- almost incidental
Signs of email frauds in general:
-The email is unsolicited
-The tone, grammar, and overall style of the emails are noticeably less polished and professional than expected from a reputable, established corporation
-The offer seems to good too be true
-The situation described seems bizarre or unlikely
What to do if you think an offer matching any of these characteristics might be genuine:
-Contact the Better Business Bureau to investigate the company
-If the company seems legitimate, look up the company’s phone number in a phone book (do not use contact information given to you in the email!) and call to verify
-Have the company send you relevant documentation to verify the offer through the mail
-Verify the information independently

Officers learned that the subject had driven on the curb and stopped abruptly without a signal on Cypress Street. Officer then observed that the license plate was not illuminated and conducted the traffic stop. Officer queried the subject and learned that the status of the subject’s license was suspended. The subject was informed and was subsequently placed under arrest for operating after suspension, failure to use signals, and defective equipment.

The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for the outstanding warrant, failure to inspect a motor vehicle, and operating after suspended registration.

Officers were patrolling the area of Beacon Street when they observed a vehicle stopped at a green light straddling the lines. The vehicle stayed stationary through the entire green light, the red light and then began turning on the following green light. Officers conducted a traffic stop on Englewood Avenue. Officers approached the vehicle and immediately smelled a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle. Officers conducted field sobriety tests and learned that the subject was indeed under the influence. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for operating under the influence of alcohol.
Armed Robbery
Occurred at 8:21 PM (6/24) – Muddy River
Officers responded to a report of an armed robbery attempt. Officers learned that a male victim had been walking through the Muddy River footbridge when a white male subject approached him asking for his bag. The victim and the subject were involved in a brief struggle/ confrontation where both subjects were injured. The subject failed to retrieve the bag and fled. The victim walked to a local apartment building to wash up the injury and call the police. The subject was described at a white male, 5’4”, 120-130 lbs, disheveled hair that hung to his chin, goatee, wearing a black and gray North Face jacket and blue jeans. Brookline Police have increased officer surveillance in the area.
Motor Vehicle Theft:
Occurred between 7:00 PM (6/24) and 10:30 PM (6/24) – Beacon Street
Officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle theft. Officers learned that the victim parked his vehicle on Beacon Street at approximately 7:00 PM and when he returned the vehicle was missing. Officers checked the area for the vehicle but the vehicle was not recovered.

Officers caught up to the subject and the subject was placed under arrest and charged with multiple motor vehicle infractions such as failure to stop for police, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, operating to endanger, operating after suspension, and resisting arrests, failure to stop at a red light, marked lanes violations, no directional while turning, and speeding.

Officers responded to a report of shoplifting on Harvard Street. Officers learned that two subjects had entered the store and placed multiple baby items into bags and fled. The suspects were described as one, older black female wearing yellow clothing and one black male wearing all black. Officers searched the area for the suspects but could not locate them. About an hour later officers received another call reporting that an employee had located a wallet that was believed to be one of the suspects. Officers seized the wallet for evidence and identification purposes. While conducting surveillance in the area, the officers observed a broken down vehicle on Harvard Street. A female subject matching the suspect’s description exited the vehicle and began walking. Officers approached the suspect and positively identified her with the license from the wallet. The subject was questioned and verified as the subject from the earlier shoplifting case. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for shoplifting. During the inventory search of the subject multiple drugs and drug paraphernalia were found on her person. The subject will be additionally charged with Possession of Class A heroin, Possession of class B Cocaine, Possession of class E, Carrying a dangerous weapon, and assault.

Officers responded to a report of a male subject trying to fill a fake prescription. Upon arrival officers spoke with the reporting person and learned that the subject had attempted to fill the fake prescription. When the reporting person saw the prescription he noticed items out of place that lead him to believe that it was a false prescription. The reporting person then faxed the prescription to the hospital that allegedly wrote the prescription and they confirmed that it was indeed a fake. The prescription was confiscated and the subject was subsequently placed under arrest for uttering and forgery.

Upon the traffic stop officers learned that the subject’s license to operate in Massachusetts was suspended. The subject was informed and subsequently placed under arrest for operating after suspension.

Occurred between 12:30 AM (6/10) and 2:00 AM (6/11) – Boylston Street
Officers were patrolling the area when they observed what seemed to be a dispute between two subjects at a local gas station. Upon arrival officers learned that there had been a prior incident that caused the two subjects to have words with one another. The employee of the gas station claimed that a week earlier a subject had came into the service station and asked for change for a twenty. When the employee gave change to the subject he realized that the twenty that was provided to him felt and appeared different. The employee used a pen that detects counterfeit money on the twenty and discovered it was indeed counterfeit. The subject had already left, so the employee’s boss informed him that the next time the subject came to the station to take down the license plate number of the subject. When the subject returned, the employee did what he was instructed to do. The subject became agitated and questioned what the employee was doing writing down the license plate number of the vehicle he was in. That is when the officers arrived. Officers observed the twenty dollar bill and confirmed that the bill was a fake. Officers requested that the subject be summonsed to court for uttering and forgery of counterfeit money.

The subject was identified and medically cleared. Officer then queried the subject and there was an active warrant out for the subject’s arrest. The subject was subsequently placed under arrests and transported to the Brookline Police Department.

Officers were patrolling the area of Harvard Street when they observed a Massachusetts registered vehicle conducting an illegal U-turn and operating in the wrong direction. Officers conducted a traffic stop for an illegal U-turn. Upon investigation officers queried the Massachusetts license to operate and learned that the license to operate was expired. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for operating without a license, and an illegal U-turn.
Occurred at 3:27 PM (6/16) – Clinton Road/ Dean Road
Officers responded to a report of a suspicious person that was looking into house in the area. Dispatch gave a description of a black male wearing a white cutoff tee shirt, dark backpack, and riding a yellow bike. While in the area officers observed a male matching the description given. When officers attempted to speak with the subject, he got on his bike and attempted to flee the area. After a short foot pursuit officers were able to catch up with the subject. The subject was placed under arrest for resisting arrest. After a short interview and inventory search of the subject, officers learned that the subject had three cell phones and a few credit cards on his person that did not belong to him. The subject was subsequently charged with Breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, two counts of receiving stolen property over the cell phones, and two counts of receiving stolen property over the credit cards.

Officers were patrolling the area when they observed a vehicle go through a red light. Officers conducted a traffic stop due to the red light violation. Upon the stop officers queried the operator’s license which came back as inactive. Officers informed the subject and he was subsequently placed under arrest for operating with a not duly license.

Officers conducted a traffic stop for an illegal U-turn. Upon investigation officers queried the Massachusetts license to operate and learned that the license to operate was expired. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for operating without a license, and an illegal U-turn.
Occurred at 3:27 PM (6/16) – Clinton Road/ Dean Road
Officers responded to a report of a suspicious person that was looking into house in the area. Dispatch gave a description of a black male wearing a white cutoff tee shirt, dark backpack, and riding a yellow bike. While in the area officers observed a male matching the description given. When officers attempted to speak with the subject, he got on his bike and attempted to flee the area. After a short foot pursuit officers were able to catch up with the subject. The subject was placed under arrest for resisting arrest. After a short interview and inventory search of the subject, officers learned that the subject had three cell phones and a few credit cards on his person that did not belong to him. The subject was subsequently charged with Breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, two counts of receiving stolen property over the cell phones, and two counts of receiving stolen property over the credit cards.
Occurred at 1:13 (6/17) – Jamaica Way/ Pond Avenue
Officers were patrolling the area when they observed a vehicle go through a red light. Officers conducted a traffic stop due to the red light violation. Upon the stop officers queried the operator’s license which came back as inactive. Officers informed the subject and he was subsequently placed under arrest for operating with a not duly license.

Officers were patrolling the area of Beacon Street when they conducted a traffic stop for an expired registration sticker. Officer responded to a report of assault and battery. Upon arrival officers learned that there was a fair at the Devotion school with rides and games being held. Two young teens were on a jumping ride when they were asked to exit the ride. Words were exchanged and a verbal argument ensued. When the teens did not exit the jumper right away the man working the ride grabbed one of the victims by the shoulder and physically removed him from the ride. Both parties were interviewed and officers learned that no medical attention was needed. The subject was advised and summonsed to court for simple assault and battery.

At approximately 9:30 PM on 6/14/11 officers were on bike patrol at Amory park when they observed a vehicle parked after the hours of operation in a local park. The vehicle appeared to have four occupants inside. Officers approached the vehicle to advise them that Amory Park was closed to the public after dusk. When the officer approached the vehicle he observed a male subject rolling a cigar with a substance inside that is believed to be marijuana. The officers also observed other sources of marijuana and paraphernalia. All four subjects of the vehicle were issued By law citations for possession of less than on ounce of marijuana and sent on their way.

There will be a road race starting at 10:00 Harvard Street will be closed from 525 Harvard to 2 Harvard Street. Washington Street will be closed from Park Street to Boylston St. Cypress Street will be closed from Boylston Street to Washington Street. All side streets will be affected. After the race most of the course will re-open until 12:00. At this time the course will close for the parade to begin. Roads should be open at 2:00PM. Expect delays on Beacon Street at the Intersection of Harvard Street during the parade. Along the course there will be a no parking ban, posted Saturday night. Vehicles in violation on Sunday morning will be towed. Still time to join in on the road race that day. Sign up at Cypress Park that morning 9:00. Officers conducted a traffic stop for speeding. Upon investigation officers learned that the subject’s license to operate in Massachusetts was suspended. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for operating after suspension. The subject was issued uniformed citations for speeding, failure to stop at a red light, and defected equipment.

Officers conducted a traffic stop for a suspended license status. Upon investigation officers learned that the subject had provided a false name due to the suspension status. The subject was subsequently placed under arrests for operating after suspension and providing a false identification.

Officers conducted a traffic stop for an illegal lane change and failure to stop for a stop sign. Upon investigation officers learned that the subject was operating without a proper Massachusetts license. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for operating without a license. Upon the booking process officers learned that the male subject had given a false name/ alias. He was additionally charged with providing a false identification.

Officers responded to a report of threats and robbery. Officers responded to both the reporting person’s location as well as conducted a traffic stop with the suspects of the robbery. Officer learned that three males had hired an escort service. Upon the arrival of the females, an argument ensued due to the fact that the females were not the same as the males had requested. During the argument the two females assaulted the males, took their money, and fled. Officers conducted a traffic stop of the suspected vehicle and the victims confirmed the identity of the suspects. The two females and the male driver were all subsequently placed under arrest. The male driver was placed under arrest for an outstanding warrant. One female was placed under arrest for unarmed robbery, threats to commit a crime, and possession of a class E substance. The second female was placed under arrest for unarmed robbery, and a default warrant.

Officers responded to a report of a robbery. Upon arrival officers learned that the two reporting males had stopped at a bank to drop off money in the drop off deposit box. When one male approached the bank two unknown males, the suspects, approached the victim and began assaulting him in order to retrieve the bag of money. The suspects injured the victim, retrieved the bag and fled. Officers conducted a search in the area for the suspects but were unsuccessful.

BROOKLINE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT TEAM ADVISES CAUTION DURING EXTREMELY HOT WEATHER
BROOKLINE, MA – With the extremely hot weather the region is presently experiencing, the Brookline Emergency Management Team (BEMT) is advising people to be cautious during this period of extreme heat, and is offering some tips to help keep cool and safe.
“With Thursday’s temperatures expected to rise to the high 90’s in Brookline, a few common sense measures can reduce heat-related problems, especially for the elderly, the very young and people with respiratory ailments, who are more susceptible to the effects of high temperatures,” said Dr. Alan Balsam, Brookline’s Director of Public Health. “The forecast calls for temperatures to fall back to the 70’s on Friday.”
Here are some tips to follow during hot, humid weather:
• Slow down, avoid strenuous activity. Do not try to do too much on a hot day.
• Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect heat and sunlight and help maintain normal body temperature. Protect your face with a wide-brimmed hat.
• Drink plenty of water regularly and often, even if you do not feel thirsty. Attempt to stay hydrated.
• Limit intake of alcoholic beverages. They can actually dehydrate your body.
• Eat well-balanced, light, regular meals. Avoid high protein foods that increase metabolic heat.
• Stay indoors as much as possible.
• If you do not have air conditioning, stay on your lowest floor, out of the sun. Electric fans do not cool the air, but they do help evaporate perspiration, which cools your body.
• Go to a place where you can get relief from the heat, such as air conditioned schools, libraries, theaters and other community facilities that may offer refuge during the warmest times of the day.
• Cover windows that receive morning or afternoon sun with drapes, shades, awnings or louvers. Outdoor awnings or louvers can reduce the heat that enters a home by up to 80%.
• Avoid too much sunshine. Sunburn slows the skin’s ability to cool itself. If you are outside, use sunscreen lotion with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating.
• Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle.
• Check on family, friends and neighbors.
In normal weather, the body’s internal thermostat produces perspiration that evaporates and cools the body. However, in extreme heat and high humidity, evaporation is slowed and the body must work extra hard to maintain normal temperature, which may lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If you believe you, or anyone you are with, is experiencing a heat-related medical emergency, promptly call 9-1-1, and if possible, move to a cooler place.

Officers responded to a report of unlicensed soliciting. Upon arrival officers learned that a male subject was soliciting magazines but was not properly licensed to do so in Brookline. Officers advised the subject and sent him on his way. Officers observed the same male subject walking in the wrong direction of where he stated he was going. Officers again advised the subject that he may not solicit and if he does it would result in arrest. Officers responded to another call of soliciting and reported to the address. Upon arrival they observed the same male subject trying to solicit magazines. The male was subsequently placed under arrest for willful violation of a town by law.

Officers responded to a report of larceny of a motor vehicle. Upon arrival officers observed a vehicle missing three tires. The tires were later found and returned to the owner.

Occurred between 5:40 PM (6/7) and 6:00 PM (6/7) – Babcock Street
Officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle theft. Upon arrival officers found a vehicle blocking a driveway that was still running and had wired hanging from the ignition as if hotwired. The owner of the vehicle was advised of the theft and the vehicle was towed for safe keeping.

Upon the stop officers noticed a male driver sleeping in the front drivers sleep with the engine still running. Officers successfully awoke the driver after several attempts. The vehicle and subject distinctively smelled of alcohol. Officers conducted field sobriety tests and observed that the male subject was under the influence of alcohol. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for operating under the influence of alcohol as a second offense.

Occurred between 10:30 PM (6/2) and 8:50 AM (6/3) – Cypress Street
Officers responded to two similar reports of burglary. Officers observed similar signs of break ins at two local restaurants on Cypress Street. Both break ins resulted in forced entry and cash was stolen.

Officers responded to a report of burglary. Upon arrival officers observed the back door to the restaurant severely damaged. These were signs of forced entry. Multiple items were stolen included a large sum of cash.

Officers responded to a report of burglary. Upon arrival officers observed the back door to the restaurant severely damaged. These were signs of forced entry. Multiple items were stolen included a large sum of cash.

Officers conducted a traffic stop for having an invalid registration sticker. Upon investigation officers learned that the operator had a straight warrant out for his arrest. Upon investigation officers learned that the operator did not have a registration for the vehicle and appeared to be under the influence of some sort. During the stop officers learned that the subject had a substance described as heroin and other contraband in his possession. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for Possession of a Class A substance, no registration in possession and failure to yield at a rotary.

Officers responded to a report of a person attempting to pass a stolen check. Upon investigation officers learned that a male subject had attempted to cash stolen checks multiple times. During the last attempt the subject got nervous and fled. Officers were conducting searches within the area for the suspect. At one point the suspect was located but still continued to flea. Officers later returned to the suspect’s house and the subject was subsequently placed under arrests for 2 active warrants.

The suspect was in possession of the stolen items and had visible signs of heroin possession. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for possession of a Class A substance, and receiving stolen property.

Officers conducted field sobriety tests and learned that the subject had been operating under the influence of alcohol. The subject had a suspended license as well. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for operating under the influence of alcohol, and operating after suspension.

The employees looked at the surveillance cameras and observed a male subject placing several razor blades into a bag and then flee the store.

Officers responded to a report of larceny. Upon arrival officers learned that a customer had stolen a bottle of tanning lotion from the store. The surveillance camera showed the customer placed the lotion into the bag. Employees of the store identified the subject and the subject was contacted to come back in and pay for the lotion. The subject never showed and will be summonsed to court for larceny.

Officers responded to a report of a burglary. Upon arrival officers learned that the victims were on vacation for a week and when they returned home they noticed items missing from the house and multiple rooms in disarray.

Upon investigation officers learned that the subjects were not conducting bicycle theft, but the driver of the vehicle did not have a proper Massachusetts license to operate. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for operating without a license.
Occurred at 7:37 AM (5/26) – Harvard Street
Officers conducted surveillance at a local pharmacy due to multiple past shoplifting incidents. While conducting surveillance the employee identified two of the subjects that were involved in the past incidents. The subjects attempted to steal more items when officers approached the subjects. The subjects were subsequently placed under arrest for shoplifting and will both be charged with three counts of shoplifting and one count of attempt to commit a crime.
Breaking and Entering and Larceny of Motor Vehicles:

The subject was additionally charged with receiving stolen property and the bicycle was returned to its owner.

The Brookline Police Department Launches Special High Visibility Click It or Ticket Enforcement Blitz
Massachusetts is Getting Tough on All Drivers and Passengers in an Effort to Boost Seat Belt Use and Save Lives
Brookline, MA -As part of a nationwide effort to save lives, the Brookline Police Department, in partnership with the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security's (EOPSS) Highway Safety Division (HSD), the State Police and nearly 190 other local departments, is launching a high-visibility seat belt enforcement blitz called Click It or Ticket. The message is simple: Massachusetts drivers and passengers should always wear their seat belts or be ready to face the consequences.
This special crackdown, beginning May 23 and running through June 5, marks the first seat belt enforcement mobilization across the state this year, designed to increase seat belt use and decrease motor vehicle fatalities and injuries. Over 180 police departments and the State Police have adopted zero-tolerance policies for seat belt violations, signaling the increasing importance of the issue.
"Injuries caused by motor vehicle crashes cost the taxpayers and businesses hundreds of millions of dollars every year," said Captain Michael Gropman. "We can help reduce those costs by making sure people buckle up, every trip, every time. By showing motorists traveling through the Town we mean business, we hope to increase the seatbelt usage rates." A survey last year showed an average of 83% usage rate in the Town of
Brookline.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), based on known usage, 52 percent of the passenger vehicle occupants killed in motor vehicle crashes in Massachusetts during 2009 were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, three percent higher than the national average.
"A lot of people ignore the statistics because they see themselves as good drivers," said Capt. Gropman, "but they forget that they can get hurt because of other reckless drivers. Your best defense is to obey the law, and buckle up."
That's why the Brookline Police Department applied for a federal grant from EOPSS/HSD along with their national, statewide and local partners to conduct this special Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization. Funded by EOPSS/HSD through a federal grant, stepped-up law enforcement activities will be conducted in late May and early June. Due to several other suspicious facts officer stopped the subject. Officers observed in plain site clear plastic bags containing a substance known to be marijuana. The subject was subsequently placed under arrests for possession of marijuana.

The subject was additionally charged with possession of class B with intent to distribute and a school zone violation.

The subject was additionally cited with possession of marijuana less than an ounce.

Officers responded to a report of breaking and entering and larceny. Upon arrival officers learned that a laptop computer was taken out of the apartment. All roommates reported that all of the doors were locked when they left the apartment. There were signs of forced entry through the window. There were other break-ins within the surrounding areas.

Officers were reporting to a past break-in when the apartment next door reported a break in as well. Upon investigation officers learned that the apartment had also been broken into by forced entry through the window. Items missing from the apartment included multiple laptops, cash and other items.

Upon investigation officers learned that the homeowner of the house was out of the country and a neighbor/ friend was retrieving the mail for them until they returned. When the neighbor went to put the mail in the house they found the door broken and the bolt lock snapped off. The house was ransacked and multiple items were missing from the household.

Officers conducted a traffic stop for failure to come to a complete stop. Upon investigation officers learned that the driver’s license was suspended. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest for operating after suspension and a red light violation.

Officers responded to a report of larceny. Upon investigation officers learned that the suspect had removed a razor from its package and placed in to a plastic bag that the suspect was carrying. The store employee confronted the suspect, retrieved the item and called the police. The suspect was subsequently placed under arrest for shoplifting.

Officers responded to a report of larceny. Upon investigation officers learned that three females were acting suspicious and gathering multiple items into a cart. They then met in the corner with a male subject who started to head towards the exit of the store with all of the merchandise. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for Larceny.
Occurred at 2:43 AM (4/29) – Washington Street/ Pond Avenue
Officers conducted a traffic stop for an expired inspection sticker. Upon investigation the officer could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle. Officers also observed two beer cans in a center console. Officers conducted field sobriety tests and learned that the subject was operating under the influence of alcohol. The subject was subsequently placed under arrests for operating under the influence of alcohol.
Occurred at 1:40 AM (4/30) – Boylston Street/ Cypress Street
Officers conducted a traffic stop for speeding. Upon investigation officers learned that the subjects license to operate was suspended. The subject was subsequently placed under arrests for operating after suspension and speeding.

Officers conducted a traffic stop for a marked lane violation and failure to display a front license plate. Upon investigation officers learned that the subject’s license as suspended. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for operating after suspension and not duly licensed.
Occurred at 6:00 AM (4/30) – Kenwood Street/ Harvard Street
Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop for failure to wear a helmet on a motorized scooter. The subject refused to stop, which later turned into a foot pursuit. After an extensive search of the subject, another officer observed a vehicle with multiple passengers stop and attempt to move the scooter. Officers conducted the traffic stop of that vehicle. Upon investigation the subjects seemed to be very nervous. The passenger of the vehicle kept reaching for an object under the seat. For the safety of the officers and subjects, officers removed the passenger from the vehicle and attempted to conduct a pat and frisk. The subject did not cooperate and was fighting and assaulting the officers. When additional officers arrived they were able to identify the subject as the suspect previously on the stolen scooter. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for 2 counts of Assault and Battery on a police officer, receiving stolen property, possession of burglarious tools, resisting arrest, threats, and failure to stop for police. Officers conducted a search of the vehicle and found several weapons, burglarious tools, and marijuana paraphernalia. The three remaining passengers were subsequently placed under arrests. One subject was charged with accessory after the fact, possession of burglarious tools, and receiving stolen property by joint venture. The second subject was charged with accessory after the fact and receiving stolen property by joint venture. The third subject was charged with using a false name, accessory after the fact, possession of burglarious tools, receiving stolen property by joint venture. The third subject was also issued citations for marked lanes violation and not duly licensed.

Officers responded to a report of malicious damage to a building. Upon arrival officers located a subject that matched the description of the suspect that had smashed the glass window of the building. Officers learned that the subject had been drinking and got into a small argument with his girlfriend. When she refused to speak with him the subject got angry and smashed the window with a fire extinguisher. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for malicious damage to a building.
Occurred between 6:07 PM (5/1) and 6:50 PM (5/1) – Boylston Street/ Heath Street
Officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash. Upon investigation officers observed the subject had visible signs of intoxication. Officers conducted field sobriety tests and learned that the subject was under the influence of alcohol. The subject was subsequently placed under arrests for operating under the influence of alcohol.
Occurred at 12:35 AM (5/1) – Hammond Street/ Woodland Road
Officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival officers learned that there was one subject involved who was being treated by the paramedics. It was clear that the subject had been drinking due to the odor of alcohol. The subject was transported to the hospital. The subject’s license was seized and the subject will be charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, operating to endanger, speeding, and marked lanes violation.

Officers responded to a report of sexual assault. Upon arrival officers learned that a male subject that was described as 5’10 with long, dark hair, a beard, and wearing a dark coat had inappropriately exposed himself to another subject within the library. The male fled and the investigation is ongoing.

Occurred at 9:40 AM (4/26) – Longwood Avenue/ St Paul Street
Officers were conducting surveillance in the area due to a recent string of burglaries. Officers observed a vehicle that matched the description of the vehicle reported in the past burglaries. Officer’s observed one of the males of the vehicle enter the courtyard of the buildings that have recently been burglarized, knock on some doors and windows, and then returned back to the vehicle. The vehicle then left the premise. Officers learned that the vehicle’s status was stolen and they conducted a traffic stop. Upon investigation officers learned that the driver of the vehicle did not have a proper driver’s license and was subsequently placed under arrests. Officers also observed multiple tools and items related to burglary activity. Both subjects were additionally charged with possession of burglarious tools and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Occurred at 12:48 AM (4/27) – Boylston Street/ Lee Street
Officers conducted a traffic stop for speeding. Upon investigation officers learned that the driver’s license status was suspended. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for operating after suspension and speeding. The passenger was not wearing a seat belt. After officers conducted a query of the passenger, officers learned the passenger had a default warrant out for her arrest. The passenger was subsequently placed under arrest for the warrant.

Officers conducted a traffic stop for speeding and marked lane violations. Upon investigation officers learned that the driver smelled of alcohol. Officers conducted field sobriety tests and came to the conclusion that the subject was operating under the influence of alcohol. Officers also learned that the driver’s license was expired. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for operating under the influence of alcohol, not duly licensed, marked lane violation, and speeding.
April 27th- 28th
Larceny:
Occurred at 3:56 PM (4/27) – Commonwealth Avenue
Officers responded to a report of attempted larceny. Upon arrival officers learned that a male subject had entered the pharmacy and was walking up and down the isles suspiciously. An employee of the pharmacy was doing surveillance out back and saw the male place items into a plastic bag that he was carrying and headed for the exit. The employee was able to obtain the bag but the suspect fled.
Burglary:
Occurred at 8:07 PM (4/27) – Allerton Street
Officer responded to a report of a burglary. Officers learned that the family heard a noise coming from the front porch. When the victim looked she saw a male subject running from the house with one of the family bikes and riding away on it. No suspects have been found thus far.
Possession:
Occurred at 1:16 AM (4/28) – Aspinwall Avenue/ Kent Street
Officers observed a male acting suspicious in front of a local residence. Upon investigation officers learned that the subject had a smoking pipe filled with what appeared to be marijuana. The subject was issued a citation for possession of marijuana less than an ounce.

The Brookline Police Department will be conducting liquor stings, which involve liquor compliance checks starting now throughout the year. These stings will be conducted at all liquor licensed establishments, including package stores, restaurants and variety stores. These compliance checks are part of the duties of the department’s liquor control officer and will be done on a continuous basis throughout the year.
Preventing underage drinking is everyone’s responsibility. Compliance checks reassure youths do not have easy access to alcohol and that people over 21 years of age are not buying alcohol for underage youths, including employees and liquor license holders. Such activities and frequent oversight of alcohol retailers increases compliance.

As spring is upon us we want to remind you of the rules pertaining to the operation of leaf blowers. These rules are covered in our Nuisance Control By -Law that went into effect last year. This Nuisance Control by Law can be found on the Town Of Brookline Website. Set out below are pertinent sections addressed in the By-Law
• No leaf blower shall be operated before 8:00A.M or later than 8:00P.M Monday through Friday. No leaf blower shall be operated before 9:00A.M or after 8:00 P.M on the weekends and holidays.
• All leaf blowers are to be operated as recommended by the manufacturer. No modifications to the machine are allowed.
• In the event that a police officer or other Town employee, observes that a leaf blower has been modified or damaged, or does not have the proper manufacturer’s or Town label, the operator will be instructed to have the machine tested by the Town
• Starting May 3rd`, inspections will be conducted by the Town at the DPW facility at 870 Hammond Street. They will continue every first and third Tuesday night from 5:00PM through 7:00PM. These inspections will determine whether or not the machines are in compliance with the acceptable noise levels as set out in the by-law. No appointments necessary. The by-law prohibits the use of leaf blowers that exceed 67db. Those machines that pass inspection will be furnished with a label indicating that they may be operated within Brookline.
• Questions and information call the DPW at 617-646-2700.
We are recommending that you check your leaf blowers for the proper manufacturer’s label indicating that the noise level of the machine does not exceed 67 db. Occurred at 5:26 PM (4/25) – Brook Street/ Aspinwall Avenue
Officers conducted a traffic stop for marked lane violation. Upon investigation officers learned that the driver’s license was suspended. The subject was subsequently placed under arrests for operating after suspension. Officers learned that the passenger of the vehicle had syringes with residue of what appeared to be heroin. The subject was subsequently placed under arrests for possession of a Class a substance. During the prisoners search at the station officers discovered two clear plastic bags of substances that appeared to be consistent with heroin on the driver’s person. The driver was additionally charged with possession of Class A with intent to distribute, and violation of a Drug free school zone.
Larceny from a Building:
Occurred between 5:30 PM (4/15) and 6:00 AM (4/19) – Beacon Street
Officer responded to a report of larceny from a building. Upon arrival officers met with the victim who stated the building is under construction. The construction owner stated that several tools were missing from the site. An electrician also working in the same building complained of missing tools as well. All employees have been advised to remove their tools from the premises before leaving at night.
Arrests:
Occurred at 5:26 PM (4/25) – Brook Street/ Aspinwall Avenue
Officers conducted a traffic stop for marked lane violation. Upon investigation officers learned that the driver’s license was suspended. The subject was subsequently placed under arrests for operating after suspension. Officers learned that the passenger of the vehicle had syringes with residue of what appeared to be heroin. The subject was subsequently placed under arrests for possession of a Class a substance. During the prisoners search at the station officers discovered two clear plastic bags of substances that appeared to be consistent with heroin on the driver’s person. The driver was additionally charged with possession of Class A with intent to distribute, and violation of a Drug free school zone.

Officers conducted a traffic stop for following too closely, failure to dim headlights, and marked lane violation. Upon investigation officers learned that the subject did not have a proper Massachusetts license to operate. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for not duly licensed, marked lane violation, following too closely, and failure to dim headlights.
Occurred at 5:13 PM (4/23) – Beacon Street
Officers conducted a traffic stop for a failed inspection sticker. Upon investigation officers learned that the subjects license was revoked. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for operating with an expired license.
Occurred at 5:27 PM (4/23) – Harvard Street
Officers conducted a traffic stop for a red light violation. Upon investigation officers learned that the subject’s license to operate in Massachusetts was suspended. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for operating after suspension and red light violation.
Occurred at 2:03 AM (4/24) – Park Drive/ Brookline Avenue
Officers were conducting foot patrol when they observed a male within a vehicle handling what seemed to be marijuana. Officer approached the vehicle, identified themselves as officers, and asked the driver to roll down his window. The male subject did not comply and began to drive away. The officers informed the police over the radio the description of the vehicle and the reason for the stop and additional officers who were in the area stopped the vehicle. Upon investigation officers observed a dangerous weapon in plain view of the vehicle. The subject was subsequently placed under arrest for refusing to obey an officer, and carrying a dangerous weapon. Upon inventory of the vehicle, officers additionally found marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and additional dangerous weapons. The subject was additionally charged with marijuana possession less than an ounce and another count of carrying a dangerous weapon.
Occurred at 2:58 AM (4/24) – Fisher Avenue/ Leicester Street
Officers conducted a traffic stop for spinning the tires of a vehicle, and a dangerous left turn. Upon investigation officers detected an odor of liquor emanating from the vehicles interior. Officers learned that the subject was operating under the influence of alcohol and subsequently placed under arrests.
Occurred between 6:45 AM (4/24) and 7:10 AM (4/24) – Cypress Street/ Davis Avenue
Officers conducted a traffic stop for a marked lane violation. Upon investigation officers could detect a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle and the subject. Officers learned that the driver was operating under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently placed under arrests.
Breaking and Entering and Larceny of a Motor Vehicle:
Occurred between 7:00 PM (4/21) and 7:57 AM (4/22) – Bonad Road
Officers responded to a report of breaking and entering and larceny of a motor vehicle. Upon arrival officers learned that the vehicle had a smashed window and a purse was stolen. The purse was later recovered and no other damage was done to the vehicle.
Burglary:
Occurred between 10:00 PM (4/23) and 10:45 PM (4/23) – Alton Place
Officers responded to a report of burglary. Upon arrival officers learned that a basement window had been smashed and two laptops and cash were missing from the residence. There were footprints coming from the smashed window which were submitted as evidence. This case is under investigation.
