The Brookline Police Department would like to thank those citizens who showed up to expressed their concerns during last night’s public hearing. The public hearing was successful in addressing several issues pertaining to the increase of aggressive turkeys seen throughout town recently. The Department will follow-up on targeting reports of the three most hostile tom turkeys, as well as, all other turkey calls. In the mean time, we would like to remind the citizens of Brookline of ways in preventing conflicts with turkeys:
• Don’t Feed Turkeys – Keep things wild! Feeding, whether direct or indirect, can cause turkeys to act tame and may lead to bold or aggressive behavior, especially in the breeding season
• Keep Bird Feeder Areas Clean – Use feeders designed to keep seed off the ground, as the seed attracts turkeys and other wild animals. Clean up spilled seed from other types of feeders daily. Remove feeders in the spring, as there is plenty of natural food available for all birds.
• Don’t Let Turkeys Intimidate You – Don’t hesitate to scare or threaten a bold, aggressive turkey with loud noises, swatting with a broom or water sprayed from hose. A dog on a leash is also an effective deterrent.
• Cover Windows or Other Reflective Objects – If a turkey is pecking at a shiny object such as a vehicle or window, cover or otherwise disguise the object. Harass the bird by chasing it, squirting with a hose or other means of aggression.
• Protect Your Gardens And Crops – You can harass turkeys searching for food in your garden. Dogs tethered on a run can also be effective in scaring turkeys away from gardens. Netting is another option to employ. In agricultural situations, some scare devices are effective.
• Educate Your Neighbors – Pass this information along: Your efforts will be futile if neighbors are providing food for turkeys or neglecting to act boldly towards the birds. It requires the efforts of the entire neighborhood to help keep wild turkeys wild.

Robbery-Firearm: 12/6 at 11:02pm - Harvard Street
Officers responded to a report of an armed robbery of a store. Store employees stated that just before closing time, a suspect entered the store, displayed a black semi-automatic handgun, and ordered one of the employees to place the cash from the register inside a bag. The suspect then fled. Suspect is described as a white or light skinned Hispanic male, approximately 5'07", medium build, wearing a blue hooded pull- up sweatshirt, a black baseball cap, a black ski mask covering the lower half of his face, gray jeans (tattered on the bottom rear of the legs) and black sneakers.
Warrant: 12/6 at 9:30am – Egmont St
Officers arrested a female subject who had two active warrants on her record.

A random query of a vehicle's registration check revealed that the operator had a revoked registration status. Operator will be charged for Operating After Revocation (Registration) and Operating Uninsured Motor Vehicle.

Officers responded to a call for a shoplifting in progress. Upon arrival officers observed a female suspect fitting the description, given by dispatch, walking out of the store with a carriage containing several bags. The female suspect was placed under arrest and charged for shoplifting and three straight warrants.
Possession Marijuana: 12/7 at 12:53am – Harvard St
Officer observed a vehicle traveling with a defective headlight. Upon approach, officer noticed a strong odor of fresh marijuana coming from inside of the vehicle. As the driver exited his vehicle, officer observed a plastic bag containing marijuana. Driver was charged for defective equipment and Possession of less then 1 ounce of Marijuana.

On December 4,2012 a Brookline Officer was approached by a woman who stated that a man had just exposed himself to her and her son. She said she was on Babcock Street when it happened and described the suspect as an older W/M, grey hair, wearing a white blazer and dark colored pants. Officers were able to locate the suspect, and he was positively identified by the victim. The Suspect was placed under arrest and charged with Open and Gross.
On December 4, 2012 officers assigned to the 541 marked cruiser observed a white Chevy Tahoe traveling on Amory street. The officers recognized the operator and had information that the operator had a revoked license status. The officers initiated a traffic stop on Amory Street, confirmed the operators status as revoked and then placed the operator under arrest.
On December 4, 2012 Officers responded to East Coast Alpine Store, Commonwealth Ave for a report of suspicious persons in the store. The manager had called the Brookline Police because he had people in his store that he believed had shop lifted in the past. Upon further investigation one subject was found to have several outstanding warrants and he was placed under arrest. A second subject was charged with Larceny Over $250 and was also found to be in possession of a switch blade knife. An additional charge of Possession of a Dangerous Weapon was also filed.
On December 4, 2012 Officers were monitoring traffic in the area of 400 Washington Street when they observed a vehicle with an expired inspection sticker. The Officers initiated a traffic stop for the sticker violation, and upon a Registry check of the operator it was found that he had a suspended license. The driver was placed under arrest. As the operator was being removed from the vehicle he dropped a clear plastic baggie out of his pocket onto the ground. The officers retrieved the baggie and found it to contain a brown powdery substance. Based on the officers training and experience they believed the substance to be heroin. During a search of the subject a hypodermic needle was located in his front pocket. The operator was charged with Operating after suspension, Failure to submit a vehicle for inspection and Possession of Class A Heroin.
On December 4, Officers observed a motor vehicle fail to stop for the red traffic signal at 6 Harvard Street. A traffic stop was conducted and it was confirmed through The Registry of Motor Vehicles that the operator’s license status was suspended. The subject was placed under arrest and transported to the Brookline Police Station.

Officers responded to Dexter Park for a report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers could hear yelling and shouting. A friend of both residents stated that the two subjects were having a verbal argument and that they were yelling and shouting at each other very loudly. The two subjects will be charged for Disturbing the Peace.

Resident stated that he returned home to find that his front door was pried open and his bedroom rummaged through. Resident noticed several items of value missing. Detectives processed the scene and a follow up investigation will be conducted.

Officers responded to a report of a shoplifter in custody. The loss prevention manager of the store reported that he observed a female suspect exit the store after placing several items into her bag without paying for them. Female suspect was placed under arrest and charged for Shoplifting.
Larceny: 11/28 at 1:55pm – Commonwealth Ave
General Manager of a store reported that cash was stolen from her purse, which was left inside the manager’s office. Video surveillance revealed that a male suspect was inside the office and reached to the area where the purse was located. Officer requested an arrest warrant for the suspect for Larceny from a building..

The security officer reported that he observed three male suspects hiding merchandise inside a backpack. A brief struggle occurred when the security officer attempted to stop the fleeing suspects from exiting the store. Two of the suspects were placed under arrest and charged for Juvenile delinquency, to wit shoplifting and assault and battery.

A store employee stated that during a conversation with a female suspect, the conversation escalated and the female suspect poked the employee in the shoulder area. The suspect was advised to never conduct herself in that manner.

Officer observed a vehicle traveling through a red light. A query check revealed that the driver had a revoked and uninsured vehicle registration. Driver was place under arrest and charged for red light violation, revoked registration, unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle.

Two suspects in Custody for the B&E reports on Cushing Rd and Beverly Rd
On 11/24, officers conducted a follow up investigation of Breaking & Enterings on residences in Cushing Rd and Beverly Rd after receiving calls of two suspicious suspects. Caller stated that the two male suspects were on his property on Cushing Rd, and fled in a vehicle towards Milton Rd. Officers received a second call from a resident of Beverly Rd who reported that the front door to their residence was damaged and broken into. Similar incidences were reported in the Hyde Park area of Boston. Based on evidence gathered at each scene, Brookline Detectives were able to identify two suspects to be involved in the Breaking & Entering cases. On 11/28, detectives successfully executed the arrest warrants and arrested of the two suspects. Case is still ongoing.

Resident stated that he returned home from a bike ride and upon approaching his apartment, observed a subject inside the apartment. Resident reported several items stolen. The subject is last described wearing a dark jacket or sweater.

Victim reported that someone had forced into her apartment and stole several personal belongings. Victim stated that the door was left unsecured.

Subject was placed into handcuffs and charged for Disorderly Person and Resisting Arrest.

Arrest for Possession Child Pornography
On Thursday, November 15th, 2012 , the Brookline Police, working in conjunction with Massachusetts State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, arrested 32 year old Benjamin Schwartz on charges of possession of child pornography and dissemination of obscene matter. The joint investigation lead to the execution of a search warrant of Swartz’s Brookline residence. Swartz was arrested and will be arraigned in Brookline Court on 11-16-2012 .

Officer was dispatched to Northeastern University Athletic Parkson’s field for a report of a fire and injured employee. Upon arrival, officer observed smoke emanating from the garage and office door. Victim stated that he was heating white paint to paint the lines on the soccer field when the paint exploded, setting the toaster oven and the office on fire. The paint splattered all over the victim. Victim suffered facial burns, hair loss, and laceration to his right hand.

There were no tools left inside or near the vehicle.

Victim stated that cell phone was stolen from her workplace. Victim stated that she left her cell phone unattended on the bathroom sink counter as she proceeded to enter the bathroom stall. Victim claimed that it took only approximately 2 minutes before her phone was taken.
Malicious Damage/Auto: 11/10 at 2:30am & 11/11 at 2pm – Park St
Victim reported that his car had been keyed from his parking spot in the rear of Park St.
Burglary: 11/10 b/t 5:30pm & 8:00pm – Winthrop Rd
Officer responded for a report of a past burglary. Victim stated that she left her apartment door unlocked and returned to find items missing.
Officer observed a male subject stumbling on the sidewalk and then proceeded to walk into the roadway of Commonwealth Ave. The subject appeared extremely intoxicated and unsteady on his feet. For his own safety, the subject was placed into Protective Custody.
Not Duly Licensed: 11/12 at 9:45am – Pleasant St/ Crowninshield Rd
Officer observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and the tail light not illuminating. A vehicle’s registration check revealed that the driver had an expired right to operate a motor vehicle. Driver was placed under arrest and charged for operating not duly license, license not in possession and defective taillight.
Malicious Damage: B/t 11/9 & 11/11 – Beacon St
Caller reported that someone ripped off a mirror from its post in the rear of Beacon St sometime over the weekend.
Larceny: 11/12 b/t 8:00am & 5:41pm – Egmont St
Victim stated that he was in the process of moving out of his apartment on Egmont ST when he noticed one of his personal belongings missing. Victim stated that a subject was assisting him earlier with the move and allowed the subject to sleep in the apartment overnight. When confronted about the missing item, the subject denied any involvement and fled on his bicycle towards Commonwealth Ave.
Larceny: 11/12 at 2:30pm – Beacon St
Victim stated that he was unloading luggage from his vehicle to his apartment, when he believes that someone may have walked by and had taken his unattended bag in the vehicle. At 6:15pm, caller reported a bag unattended for 25-30 minutes on Beacon St. The bag was returned to the victim with an item missing.
Larceny: 11/9 at 5:30pm – Beacon St
Victim stated that a scanner was found missing from her office.

Accident/MV Hit & Run: 11/9 at 12:16am - Beacon St/Pleasant St
Victim stated that she was making a U-Turn when a motor vehicle who had been making the U-Turn behind her, struck her vehicle on the rear right side of her car. Victim stated that the other vehicle did not stop, and continued onto Pleasant Street. Case is under investigation.
Accident: 11/8 at 12:00pm - Amory St and Dummer St
Victim stated that she was struck by a motor vehicle while in the marked pedestrian crosswalk. Victim was later treated in the emergency room for injuries to her right foot, leg and hip. Operator of the vehicle will be charged for Failing to Yield to a Pedestrian in a Crosswalk.
Robbery/Attempt: 11/8 at 10:44pm – Gibbs St
Victim reported that a male suspect had tried to take her hand bag, and after several unsuccessful attempts he fled down Gibbs St towards Stedman St. Victim stated that she was in the foyer of her apartment building when the suspect assaulted her with the intention of taking her handbag. Victim stated that she observed the suspect enter the foyer through the unlocked front door and ran at her to try to grab her bag. The suspect fled after the victim struggled and screamed for help. Suspect is described as a dark skinned, medium build, approximately 6 feet tall and 30 years of age, had either a winter cap or a hood on his head, and had something grey covering his face.
Disorderly Person: 11/9 at 12:30am – Beacon St
Officer observed a subject throwing a glass bottle into the left lane of Westbound Beacon St, directly in front of the officer’s cruiser. Subject did not respond to the officer’s presence and continued to walk away. Subject appeared to be highly intoxicated and became vocally agitated and swearing loudly. Subject was placed under arrest for Disorderly Person and Minor In Possession of an Alcoholic Beverage.

Victim stated that she was driving, changing from the center lane, when her vehicle collided with another vehicle. The impact caused the victim’s vehicle to spin around, exit the roadway, go up onto the sidewalk and strike a tree. No one was reported injured.
Suspicious Activity: 11/8 at 11:46am – Washington St
Officer responded to a fraud report on Washington St. Victim stated that she received a call from a suspect claiming to be an officer. The suspect claimed that the victim’s grandson was arrested in the Dominican Republic and needed her to wire money for bail. Victim was able to make contact with her grandson and deem the phonecall a scam. Officers were able to trace the call to Montreal, Canada.
