9/15-9/19

Assault:

Occurred on 9/18 at 7:54 PM – Coolidge Corner

Officers responded to a report that there had just been a fight and there was an injured person. A suspect was located near the victim and he told officers he was involved in the fight. He then removed a small pocket knife from his pants pocket. Witnesses observed the suspect throwing the victim on the ground and kicking him. He was placed under arrest for 2 counts of Assault and Battery with a deadly weapon.

MV Theft:

Occurred at 9/18 at 1:19 AM – Beaver County Day School

Officers responded to the area for a reported breaking and entering of a motor vehicle. The caller stated that he lives behind the Beaver Country Day School's parking lot. He heard loud noises coming from the parking lot. He looked out to see what the noise was and observed three males standing around a silver sedan in the parking lot. The caller decided to drive over to the parking lot, and observed one of the males had a fire extinguisher in his hand and was spraying it all over the sedan. The other male had a baseball bat in one hand, and was banging on the window with his other hand, yelling something at a male sitting in the driver's seat of the vehicle. At this time the males saw the caller and attempted to flee the area in the silver sedan. He was able to record the license plate.

Officers entered one of the school buses in the parking lot because the door was ajar in attempt to further investigate. The odor of freshly burnt cigarettes and intoxicating liquor were on the bus. A second bus door also appeared to be ajar. There appeared to be damage to the side of the school building.

Officers then made contact with the registered owner of the vehicle, who reported her son had control of the vehicle that evening. Her son reported that his friends had borrowed the vehicle that evening. The vehicle was discovered in the parking lot of Star Market, and was covered in a white powder, consistent with what is sprayed from a fire extinguisher. The investigation is ongoing.

Occurred at 9/16 at 10:25 PM – High St.

Officers responded to the area for a breaking and entering in progress. The description given was a black male in a black T-shirt and jeans. An individual matching the description was located hiding inside of the front bushes next to the side entrance walk way of 183 High St.

The victim stated that she heard banging coming from outside and it sounded like there was someone banging on her windows trying to gain access to her apartment. It stopped, and she then heard banging at the rear door of her apartment. She opened the rear door and a black male began to walk into her apartment. The victim pushed the suspect back outside, slammed the door shut, locked it, and immediately notified 911. The suspect continued walking around the sidewalk way to the rear entrance banging on all the windows yelling to be let in. The victim heard a window shatter, and shortly after police arrived on scene. The suspect is being charged with Breaking and Entering Night time with Intent to Commit a Felony, as well as Malicious Damage.

Burglary:

Occurred on 9/19 at 12:34 PM – Hammond Park Parkway

Officers responded for a past burglary in order to take a report. At approximately 11:30 AM the building manager noticed a stain on the carpeted floor outside the trash room, which is next to the victim’s apartment. He entered the trash room and observed a large hole, which was large enough to reach through and unlock the door, in the sheet rock wall connected to the apartment. Contact was made with the resident, and it was apparent that there had been a break-in as property was strewn about all rooms in the apartment.

Larceny:

Occurred on 9/18 – Brook St.

Officers responded to the area for a reported larceny. The victims stated there was someone home all day until 7:15 PM. At 10 PM, one of the roommates returned and realized that they his been broken into.

One of the roommates stated that his window fan which was attached to the side window, and accessible via the alleyway, was pushed into his room. Laptops and other electronics were reported stolen from several rooms.

Occurred after 9/9 - Freeman St

Officers reported to the area for a reported larceny. The victim noticed that two snow blowers that he stores outside his back door had been removed. He reported suspicious behavior in the area last weekend.

On 9/10/11, he discovered that the trash barrels behind their building had been loaded with construction debris. He is aware that this type of waste must be disposed of at a dump, and he states no one on his property is currently having work done. Amongst the debris he located a bag of trash that contained discarded mail addressed to an individual in Wilmington. The victim believes that this and the snow blowers incident may be related because the trash barrels are in close proximity to where the snow blowers were stored. The investigation is ongoing.

Occurred between 914-9/15 – Heath St.

The victim parked his vehicle in his driveway at 8 PM on 9/14 and noticed at 9 PM on 9/15 that someone broke into his vehicle. The steering column was damaged and a screwdriver was on the ground near the front passenger door. It appeared if someone was trying to hot wire the vehicle. The rear passenger side vent window was smashed. Nothing was taken out of the vehicle.

Robbery:

Occurred on 9/18 at 8:50 PM – Beacon St./Powell St.

Officers reported to the area for a reported attempted robbery. The victim was approached by the suspect who at first appeared to be asking for directions, but then a few minutes later attempted to grab her purse. An individual was observed who closely matched the description of the suspect, in the John Street public parking lot. Upon seeing the marked cruiser, the suspect began to run. He was eventually detained and placed under arrest for Assault & Battery with the Intent to Rob.

Occurred on 9/15 at 2:30 PM – Park St.

Officers responded to a robbery of a bicycle that had occurred. The victim and caller reported that a white male with long hair took his bike after putting him in a headlock and may have gone into one of the addresses in the area. The surrounding alleyway leading to a number of buildings connected by a courtyard were searched at which time the suspect came out of a side door leading to the alleyway and walked directly into two officers. The suspect was asked who he was with at the time of the incident and stated that he was with his friend, who he believed had gone into the building. He appeared to be sweating profusely at the time he was located and questioned.

The bicycle was located in an alley, and officers continued to search for the suspect’s friend, who was discovered on the roof of a neighborhood in the area. Both were charged with Unarmed Robbery.

9/14-9/15

Open and Gross Lewdness:

Occurred on 9/14 – Elm St.

Officers responded to a report of indecent exposure occurred in the area. The victim began by stating that often times, herself, as well as, other residents leave some of there belongings in the entrance of the hallway to the building. On this date, upon arriving at her house she placed her sunglasses on the window sill. Later on during the day, she couldn’t find them and checked with residents to see if anyone had picked it up. At approximately 8 AM on 9/13, she went upstairs and knocked on the neighbor's apartment door. The resident came to the door in his bathrobe.

The resident did have her sunglasses, and when he turned to grab them from a table next to the door, his bathrobe came undone. He became completely exposed at that point and no attempt to cover himself up. He then handed her the sunglasses and stared at her in a "creepy" manner.

After interviewing the suspect, he was placed under arrest for Open and Gross Lewdness.

Malicious Damage:

Occurred on 9/14 at 4:18 PM – Pierce St./Holden St.

Several units were dispatched for an altercation occurring in the area. One individual was driving south on Harvard Street in the area of Linden Street. He stated that a male was hurrying to cross Harvard Street in the marked crosswalk. He then states when the male was crossing in front of his motor vehicle, he started to walk slowly. After the male crossed in front of him, the driver of the vehicle yelled "don't slow down when you see a car". He stated that he did not say anything else and continued south on Harvard Street. When he was stuck in traffic further down Harvard, the male then came up and kicked his passenger door.

The driver then immediately got out of the car and yelled at the male "you picked the wrong day". He then started to run away and the driver ran after him, catching up and grabbing him around the upper part of his body and throwing him towards the ground. He states that he held the male in that position and also had a grip on his tie.

After interviewing everyone involved, it was determined that the individual will be charged with Malicious Destruction to Property (Auto) and will be summonsed into Brookline District Court for a clerk's hearing.

Burglary:

Occurred on 9/14 – Leverett St.

Officers were dispatched to the area for a burglary that occurred sometime between 7:00am and 6:30pm. The victims explained that when they returned home this evening they noticed that the rear kitchen door was open. Upon further examination they discovered that the screen in the kitchen window, which is located next to the door, had been slashed. They discovered that both their laptops were missing. One of the victims mentioned that yesterday he played a game of basketball, with a young man, at Boylston Playground. During the course of the game this young man, asked Mr. Jones where he lived. The young man is described as a black male, 18-20 years old, 5'08", has a medium afro, a muscular build and wears braces on his teeth.

MV/Bicycle Accident:

Occurred on 9/15 at 8:26 AM – Beacon St./Westbourne Terr.

An officer in the area heard a loud scream and observed a female cyclist on the ground and a SUV slowing to a stop at that corner. The cyclist then kept screaming, "I had the right of way, he hit me!" The operator of the vehicle, stated that he was crossing over the MBTA tracks from Beacon St. onto Westbourne Ter. As his vehicle was on Westbourne Terrace, he heard something crash into the passenger side of his car, and then he noticed the cyclist on the ground.

Based on the facts and witness statements, it appears that the vehicle cut across the cyclist’s right of way. The vehicle was issued a citation for failure to yield.

MV Theft:

Occurred on 9/15 – 1228 Boylston St.

Officers were dispatched to the area for a B&E of a motor vehicle. The victim stated that he parked his vehicle bank parking lot on 9/14 at 5:30 PM. He then went out with his wife in their other car and parked next to their first car at 8 PM. At that time he did not see any damage to the car. He came out to the car this morning at 6:15 AM and found the driver’s side door lock popped off and observed the steering column to be broken with wires hanging out. The glove box was open and the items were strewn about, but nothing was reported stolen.

Occurred on 9/15 at 3:26 AM – Eliot St.

Officers were dispatched for a report of a larceny of a motor vehicle in progress. The victim stated that he was awoken to a grinding sound and when he looked outside his bedroom window he noticed his vehicle moving. He immediately went outside and observed a person attempting to get the vehicle out of the driveway. While attempting to steal his vehicle the suspect was smashing into his neighbor’s vehicle that was parked at the end of the driveway. He then opened the driver's side door of his vehicle and asked the person what he was doing. The suspect, described as a white male, approximately 20 years of age, 160 lbs, wearing a blue Tom Brady Patriot Jersey, blond/brown hair, wearing long pants and sneakers, responded that he thought it was his sister's vehicle. The victim then attempted to grab the suspect but he fled through the passenger door and began running toward Loveland Rd. The suspect could not be located after a canvas of the area.

Occurred on 9/13 – Strathmore Rd.

Officers responded to the area for a report of a B&E&L of a motor vehicle. The victim stated she parked her vehicle on Strathmore Road around 4:30 PM. She then returned around 8:00 PM on the same day and noticed that her cell phone had been taken from her vehicle.

Larceny:

Occurred on 9/14 at 2:45 PM – TJ Maxx

Officers responded to the store for a report of a shoplifter in custody. A member of the loss prevention team stated that she observed the suspect walk into the shoe section and removed the price tag from a pair of shoes. After removing the tag, the suspect was observed placing the shoes inside bag that she was carrying. She was also seen taking two shirts, rolling them up, and placing them in her bag. The suspect then started to walk towards the exit, and that is when she was stopped by TJ Max employees.

Occurred on 9/13 – Coolidge Corner

The victim reported being at J.P. Lick’s between 8:30 and 9:30 PM on September 13^th, and then she and her friend then walked to the Devotion Park. On September 14th, at approximately 10 AM, she was unable to locate her wallet. She then discovered that there were unauthorized charges pending on two of her credit cards. The victim stated that her wallet may have fallen out or been stolen on 9/13 while she was at Coolidge Corner.

Occurred on 9/13 – Lincoln Rd.

The victim reported leaving his redwood glider bench on September 13^th at 3:30 PM. He went back to his stoop at 5:10 PM and it was gone.

9/13-9/14

Shoplifting:

Occurred on 9/13 – TJ Maxx

Officers responded for a female shoplifter in custody of the loss prevention team at TJ Maxx. A member of the team stated he observed the shoplifter place items in her bag/purse. When she attempted to leave the store without paying, he confronted her at the exit ramp leading to the parking area. She then dropped the bag and attempted to exit the store but was stopped prior to leaving the inside double doors.

Breaking and Entering:

Occurred on 9/13 – Druce Street

Officers responded to the area for a reported breaking and entering. The victim left her house at 7:30 AM and returned at 3:20 PM. The upper portion of the side door had several small glass panes and the pane closest to the door knob was smashed allowing the suspect to reach inside and open the door. A computer and jewelry were reported stolen.

Occurred on 9/13 – Dwight St.

Officers responded to the area for a reported attempted breaking and entering. The victim said she left her the building at 9:30 AM and returned home at 12 noon. The back door of the building had clear and fresh pry marks and there were pieces of splintered wood lying on the ground below.

MV Crash:

Occurred on 9/13 – Boylston St./Milton Rd.

Officers were dispatched to the area for a report of a motor vehicle crash. Vehicle #1 was traveling eastbound on Rt. 9 in the vicinity of 404 Boylston St and attempted to turn right onto Milton Rd. The operator reported that as he attempted to turn right onto Milton Rd. from Boylston St. an animal (jack rabbit) crossed the street in front of the vehicle. He attempted to avoid the animal and lost control of his vehicle, colliding into a chain link fence surrounding a property on Milton Rd. at the corner of Boylston St.

There were no reported injuries.

9/12-9/13

Bicycle Accident:

Occurred on 9/12 at 3:50 – Commonwealth Ave./St. Paul St.

Officers responded to the area for a traffic crash involving a motorist and bicyclist. The driver of the vehicle and his passenger reported sitting at the red light when the biker came speeding down the bike lane and struck the passenger side view mirror. The driver said his vehicle never entered the bike lane.

Witnesses report that the driver honked his horn then entered the bike lane as if to go around the lead vehicle at the red light to make a right turn. As he did this the biker struck the vehicle and was thrown from his bike.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM YOUR HEALTH DEPARTMENT ABOUT MOSQUITO-BORNE VIRUSES
State Public Health Officials Confirm First Human Case of West Nile Virus in Newton. State raises alert level to HIGH. Brookline continues to confirm presence of West Nile Virus in mosquitoes collected at monitoring locations in Town.
On September 9, 2011, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) confirmed the first human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in Newton. The individual is still under care. In Brookline, several batches of WNV positive mosquitoes have been found at monitoring locations. We conclude the virus is present throughout the Town.
West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).
Mosquitoes get WNV and EEE by biting infected birds. People and animals can get these diseases by being bitten by an infected mosquito. There is no evidence that a person can get these viruses from handling live or dead infected birds or animals. However, gloves should be worn when handling any dead animals and double plastic bags used to discard them in the trash.
Most people bitten by mosquitoes carrying WNV will experience no symptoms or very mild symptoms and will recover on their own. Persons over 50 years of age have the highest risk of severe WNV disease. People who are bitten by mosquitoes carrying EEE tend to experience more severe symptoms. Severe symptoms of both diseases include high fever, muscle weakness, headache, disorientation, neck stiffness, paralysis, coma, tremors, convulsions and sometimes death. There is currently no vaccine or medical cure for these illnesses. In severe cases
intensive medical therapy such as intravenous (IV) fluids and nutrition, and ventilator support can be administered in hospitals.
What is Brookline doing to protect me?
The Brookline Department of Public Health is involved in active surveillance for mosquito-borne viruses. Dead bird reports are no longer collected by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) and dead birds are no longer tested for WNV as MDPH has determined that tracking and testing of dead birds is no longer a useful way to monitor WNV activity. Mosquito collecting and testing, which provide a more reliable indication of current WNV activity, began in June. For further information, call the MDPH Information line at 1-866-627-7968.
Brookline will be doing the following to address mosquito-borne viruses this summer and fall:
• Larvicide has been applied to targeted catch basins and some wetland areas to prevent hatching of new mosquitoes;
• Mosquito traps have been established and mosquito pools are being tested for the virus;
• An information line is established at (617) 730-2295 and at www.brooklinema.gov;

• Mosquito-borne virus information appears on the Town web site with a link to the State Lab including updated mosquito count and test results;
• There is inspection and enforcement of standing water areas in parks, fields, tires, etc.;
• Spraying to kill adult mosquitoes may be done, only if absolutely necessary, and if recommended by the State. Every effort will be made to notify residents of the spraying beforehand.
What can I do to protect myself?
Avoid Bites! Follow these steps:
• Avoid outdoor activity between dusk and dawn. If you must be outdoors when mosquitoes are active, wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and socks. Cover baby carriages or playpens that are outdoors with mosquito netting;
• When outside, use a mosquito repellent. Repellents that contain DEET are the most effective, although DEET should not be used on infants. This year, the CDC also recommends products which contain either the chemical Picaridin, found in Cutter Advanced; or products containing the oil of lemon eucalyptus. Alternatives to DEET that can also be effective for a limited duration (1hour) on the market are: citronella; Avon Skin-So-Soft Plus IR3535; Buzz Away, neem oil, and soybean oil;
• Avoid areas that tend to have a lot of mosquitoes, such as wetlands or swampy areas;
• Fix holes in all window and door screens;
• Remove standing or stagnant water in your yard where mosquitoes are likely to breed. Check your flower pots, wheelbarrows, garbage cans, birdbaths, swimming pool covers, clogged gutters on your house, old tires, etc.;
• Repair leaking pipes and outdoor faucets;
• Keep your grass cut short and bushes near your house trimmed so mosquitoes can’t hide;
• Call the health department if you see standing water problems that are not on your property.

9/9-9/12

OUI:

Occurred on 9/10 at 7:52 PM – Beacon St./Dean Rd.

Officers were dispatched to the area for a multiple vehicle accident. A pickup truck was lying on its side in the middle of the road, completely blocking the roadway. Five parked vehicles had suffered major damage as a result of the crash. A witness driving behind the pickup reported it swerved to the right side of the road and crashed into several vehicles before flipping onto its side.

After further investigation, the driver was determined to be Operating Under the Influence.

MV Accident:

Occurred on 9/10 – Longwood Ave./Sewall Ave.

A cab was traveling on Longwood Ave approaching Sewall Ave when the operator observed a pedestrian half way across Longwood Ave in a marked crosswalk. The driver slammed on the brakes to stop for the pedestrian, when his vehicle was struck from behind by another vehicle. Both operators denied injuries.

Burglary:

Occurred on 9/10 – Clark Rd.

Officers responded to the area for a report of a burglary. The victim reports that her entire family went shopping at approximately 2:30 PM and left the house unoccupied. When they returned at approximately 4:45 PM they noticed that their home computer was missing from the office area. Almost immediately they noticed that the computer was smashed at the top of the stairs on the second floor. They also noticed a suitcase in the hallway that is normally stored on the third floor next to the computer.

Many of the dresser drawers in the rooms had been opened and rummaged through, as well as the closets. A wallet was also taken.

Pedestrian Accident:

Occurred on 9/9 at 11:25 – Harvard St./Beals St.

Officers responded to the area for a report of a traffic crash involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, a female was observed lying in the roadway in the northbound travel lane. She was calm and alert. She was stabilized by BFD, and transported by Fallon ambulance to the hospital.

When officers spoke to the driver, he stated that he was stopped for a red light at the intersection of Harvard St and Stedman St, and he had dropped his cell phone on the floor. He stated as he was reaching down to pick it up, the light turned green, and he did not realize there was a pedestrian in the roadway. The vehicle had significant damage to the lower front passenger's side of the windshield consistent with striking a person. Neither occupant of the car reported any injuries as a result of the crash. The driver was issued a citation for Failure to Yield to a Pedestrian.

Fire:

Occurred on 9/9 at 8:36 PM- Holiday Inn

Officers responded for a report of a motor vehicle fire. Multiple companies from the Brookline Fire Dept arrived on scene, and extinguished what was described as a small electrical fire in the engine block of a Toyota Highlander.

There did not appear to be any permanent damage to the vehicle resulting from the fire. There were no injuries.

Sept 11, Media

As you may have seen in the media, credible information exists about a possible terrorist attack focused on New York or Washington, D.C, timed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001, possibly using vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices.

The Brookline Police Department maintains contact with the Boston Regional Intelligence Center. While there is no specific threat in the Brookline or Boston areas, we are encouraging all citizens to be vigilant and report suspicious activity by calling the Brookline Police Department at 617-730-2222 or 9-1-1.

The concept of homeland security begins with hometown security, where an alert public plays a critical role in keeping our nation safe.

9/7-9/8

Larceny:

Occurred on 9/7 – South St.

Officers responded to the area for a breaking and entering and larceny of a motor vehicle. The victim parked her vehicle at 6:45 AM. She left work at 3:30 PM and she noticed the front passenger window of her vehicle, was smashed. Taken off the front passenger seat was her purse which contained a wallet with credit cards, personal papers as well as cash. A GPS was also taken from the vehicle.

Occurred at 2:14 on 9/7 – Harvard St./Brainerd Rd.

Officers responded to the area for a reported assault and battery at TJ Maxx. One shoplifter was in custody, and two shoplifters had assaulted store security and were trying to flee the store. An employee from the loss prevention unit reported that three black females had just driven away in a silver colored vehicle onto Lawton St. Officers quickly found the vehicle at the intersection of Lawton and Thorndike and pulled it over.

One passenger stated that they left the store because they were told that they could leave, and that they hadn’t stolen anything. The passenger was able to provide a receipt for her purchases. Back at the store, the loss prevention team stated that they have observed the shoplifter they had in custody take two shoes from the rack and begin to tamper with the security tag, while another female, later discovered in the stopped vehicle, shielded the first from the security cameras. The first then concealed the shoes in her bag and attempted to leave the store, when they were stopped by security. The one that had concealed the shoes in her bag began assaulting security but was eventually brought into the back office where the shoes were recovered.

The female in custody as well as the one discovered in the vehicle were placed under arrest for shoplifting, assault and battery, and possession of burglarious tools.

Dr. Ed Wang, chair of the Brookline Human Relations-Youth Resources Commission, invites the community to hear about and discuss crime and police/community relations in Brookline with our Police Chief Daniel O’Leary. The program, sponsored by the Human Relations-Youth Resources Commission in cooperation with the Brookline Police Department, will take place on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the Brookline Public Library, Hunneman Hall (2nd floor), 361 Washington Street.
Topics to be covered by Chief O’Leary are:

Police officer education and training to prevent profiling

Recent neighborhood concerns
Concerns about cameras on the public way

9/6-9/7

Threats:

Occurred at 11:45 PM on 9/6 – Boylston Rd./Reservoir Rd.

Officers were dispatched to the area for a stopped MBTA bus that had requested police assistance. They entered the bus and spoke to the driver, who gestured towards a passenger and stated that he became disruptive when he got on the bus at Boylston St at Florence St. While the driver was trying to tell officers what had taken place, the passenger became agitated and was ordered off the bus. He was asked for identification. After dispatching the name of the individual, it was determined that there was an outstanding extraditable arrest warrant for him that was issued in July of 2008 out of Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

The driver relayed that when he went to start his route, the bus wouldn’t start and he was approximately 10 minutes late. When the agitated passenger got on and began expressing that he was upset at the bus being late, the driver tried to explain that the bus had broken down. The passenger continued his tirade against the driver, who became concerned that the passenger was distracting him from safely operating the bus. He asked the passenger to sit down, and he refused to do so.

The passenger then threatened the driver when he asked him "Is this your normal route?" to which the driver said "Yes!" The passenger then responded, "You see what I do to you!" He then appeared to be calling someone using his cell phone as he took a seat located on the opposite side of the driver and the first row of seats that faced forward. The driver at this point felt in fear of his life so he contacted MBTA Dispatch and requested police assistance. The passenger was arrested for threats to commit a crime and on the extraditable arrest warrant out of Kentucky.

Larceny:

Reported on 9/6 – Parkway Rd.

Officers were dispatched to take a report of a larceny of a Persian Oriental rug. The victim stated she left the rug rolled up on the top landing near the door that leads to the roof. She believes she last observed the rug around July 15, 2011. There is no sign that the building was broken into and the victim believes that someone that has access to the building removed the rug.

Motor Vehicle Crash:

Occurred at 1:27 on 9/6 – Dean Rd.

A driver on Dean Rd. lost control of his vehicle and struck an NSTAR utility pole. He was not injured, but the pole was heavily damaged. A citation for improper operation was issued.

9/2-9/5

Burglary:

Occurred between 2 and 8 PM – Pleasant St.

Officers responded to the area for a reported burglary. The victim told officers she discovered that two necklaces and 20 tablets of her prescription medicine were missing from her bedroom. She recently had the locks changed because of a fire. With the new locks she had only one key made, and that key was in her possession at all times. There was no signs of a break-in, so it is unclear how entry was made.

B&E&L of MV:

Occurred Overnight, 9/4-9/5 – Worthington St.

Officers responded to the area for a report of a breaking and entering. The passenger's side window was smashed and the vehicle was entered. This report is currently under investigation.

Larceny:

Occurred at 8 PM on 9/2 – Commonwealth Ave.

Officers responded to the area for a reported larceny. The employee stated that just before 8PM, when the staff was preparing to close for the night, there was a single customer left in the store who had requested to use the restroom. At some point, this customer left the restroom, removed a bicycle from a rack, and exited with the bike out of a front service door. The suspect is described as a white male 30-35 years of age, with blonde hair, approximately 5'-10" tall, and wearing a black T-shirt. The bike is a black and red 2011 Felt B10.

MV Crash:

Occurred at 4:48 AM on 9/2 – Beacon St./Westbourne Terr.

Officers responded to the area for a report of a motor vehicle crash. Vehicle #1 had been travelling westbound on Beacon Street when it left the marked travel lane and entered the designated parking lanes on the right shoulder. It then collided with parked vehicle (vehicle #2) and forced vehicle #2 an estimated 40' over the curb, into a town sign and then into a town tree where it came to rest. There was major front end damage to vehicle #1, and front and rear damage to vehicle #2. The driver of vehicle #1stated that he swerved to avoid animal crossing the road. The driver was a issued a citation for failure to stay within marked lanes.

9/1-9/2

Larceny:

Occurred at 12:03 PM on 9/1 – Beacon St./Summit Ave.

Officers responded to the area for a report of a larceny. The victims had left some of their personal belongs on the sidewalk while they moved into their new apartment. They unloaded all their belongings and went inside the building for no more than 5 minutes. When they came out, most of their personal items were missing, and some of their clothing was scattered all over the side walk.

It should be noted that some items were in trash bags, and since many people were moving, their items left on the sidewalk could of been mistaken as being trash. At this time, there is no description of the suspect(s).

Occurred on 8/26 – Bellingham Rd.

The victim came into the Police Station to report that some unknown person had stolen her 30' metal ladder from her side yard sometime during 9 AM and 5 PM on Friday 8/26/11. There was nothing else missing at this time.

OUI:

Occurred at 2 AM on 9/2 – Willard Rd.

An officer on patrol in the area noticed a vehicle crossing the intersection in front of him and failing to stop at the red light while doing so. The officer began following him, and noticed the driver was unable to stay within his lane and was drifting over the solid yellow lines. The driver also struck a yellow "yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk" sign. The officer then initiated a traffic stop. The driver admitted to crossing the yellow line so that he could hit the “yield to pedestrians” sign with his hand.

After further investigation it was determined that the operator was Driving Under the Influence and was placed under arrest.

Burglary:

Occurred on 9/1 – Lawton St.

Officers responded to the area for a report of a burglary. The victim stated that he had been going in and out of the apartment, moving his personal belongings to his new home in Allston.

At approximately 1 AM, he moved some items from Lawton St. to Allston. When he left he recalled locking the door. The victim then came back at approximately 2:30 AM to move more items, and again he recalls locking the front door. When he came back at approximately 6:30 AM, he noticed that the front door to the apartment was left open. When he went up to retrieve more of his personal belongings, he noticed that his LCD TV and his laptop were missing from the apartment. The suspect(s) are believed to have gained access via broken glass panel discovered near the doorknob.

Malicious Damage:

Occurred on Overnight, 8/31-9/1 – Dudley St.

Victim reports that sometime overnight on 8/31 someone defeated the gate leading to the tennis courts at the rear of her property. She discovered the gate open this morning on 9/1. Upon inspection of the gate in question and it appeared that the bracket holding the lock was removed. There appears to have been no attempt to enter the residence.

8/26-9/1

MV Break-In

Occurred between 2:30 pm and 11:30 pm on Brookline Avenue near Parkway Road. Victim reports that their front passenger side window had been broken and that their glove compartment was open and items from within were littered on the floor. Missing from the vehicle was some loose change as well as a GPS which was taken from inside the center console. The GPS unit was not visible from the street. Brookline Detectives were called to the scene to process for prints.

Arrest

Officers stopped a vehicle after running the license plate and finding that the registered owner has a suspended license. Officers confirmed that the driver was the registered owner of the vehicle, and the subject was placed under arrest. During an inventory search of the subjects vehicle the officers located a small amount of marijuana. The operator was additionally cited in accordance with Town By-Law 94C:32L Possession of Marijuana less than one ounce.

MV Theft

Officers responded to Enterprise Rent a Car, for a report of a larceny of a motor vehicle. While an employee was busy cleaning rental cars, a subject on a bicycle drove by the employee and make a complete lap of the building.

The subject then made a second lap however this time, stopped and looked into one of the vehicle in the lot. The subject is then seen riding out of the lot, still on the bicycle. Seconds later the suspect runs back into the lot on foot, and enters the same vehicle he had been canvassing. The suspect, now operating the vehicle, reverses out of the space, and exits the parking lot turning right onto Crowning shield Rd travelling in the wrong direction. The vehicle turns left onto Adams St. The vehicle is a blue 2011 Chrysler 200C convertible (MA Reg 629JD2). This information was obtained from video surveillance. No abandoned bicycles were located near the scene.

Larceny of Bike

A woman’s “cruiser” bicycle was stolen from the 1300 block of Beacon St. The NEXT Avalon 26” bicycle was taken from the rear of the victims building. The bike was secured with a chain lock however the suspect removed the bicycle leaving the rear tire and the lock still attached to the hand rail.

Malicious Destruction

A resident of Winthrop Rd reports having malicious damage done to his vehicle. The vehicle was parked in a lot on Adding ton Rd. for the night, and when the owner went to his car in the morning he found that all 4 of his tires were flattened. He called AAA to fill his tires but they wouldn't take any air, they had been punctured. Access was not gained to the interior of the vehicle.

Found Property

A citizen, while exiting the MBTA trolley at the Coolidge Corner MBTA stop, noticed a pair of keys sitting on the trolley stop bench. The good Samaritan turned the keys over to the Brookline Police where they will be held for safe keeping.

MV Accident

3 vehicles were involved in a minor damage accident on Mountfort St. All vehicles were driven away by the operators.

A cyclist complained of neck pain after being struck by a motor vehicle on Chestnut Hill Ave on 8/31. He stated the traffic was backed up from the light and the vehicle traveling behind him struck his bicycle rear tire knocking him to the ground. All he could remember was the motor vehicle was a small red vehicle and the operator was a male with brown hair, possibly in his thirties. He believes the operator was wearing a tuxedo.

B & E Suspect

We have secured videotape of a suspect in breaking and entering and attempts of commercial businesses from earlier this morning in the Coolidge Corner area.

The Coolidge Corner incidents were:

1. FIRE OPAL - 320 Harvard St. 0525 hrs 2011-4745 / cash taken from register. Entry via smashed front door.

2. BOTTEGA FIORENTINA 313 Harvard St. 0542 hrs. 2011- 4747 / unknown amount of cash taken from register. Entry via smashed front door.

3. COOLIDGE CORNER CLUBHOUSE - 307 Harvard St. 2011-4750 / attempt on rear door captured on video surveillance camera. Suspect unable to gain entrance and attempted other business doors without success.

Suspect appears to be a B/M, light complexion, 6', 25-35. Wearing a Blue/Purple New Era brand hat. Blk T-shirt, light blue jeans, gray sneakers w/white soles.

8/26-8/29

Larceny:

Occurred between 8/26-8/29 – Monmouth St.

A generator, a Multi-Quip MQ45, was reported missing from a construction site. The only way it could been taken was to have been towed away. The phrase “CAT 26” was on the side of it.

Burglary:

Occurred Overnight, 8/28-8/29 – Harvard St./Babcock St.

Officers who had responded to the area for a commercial break were canvassing the area speaking to restaurant owners about any suspicious activity. A business owner reviewed his surveillance footage and noticed a suspicious person on his premises at 3:46 AM. The suspect had attempted to open the rear door as well as the door to neighboring businesses and was unsuccessful. He then flees in the direction of Greenway Ct.

The suspect is described as a black male of light complexion, 6'0-6'2, 25-35y.o., medium build, and wearing a blue New-Era brand hat, black T-shirt, light-blue jeans, and grey sneakers with white soles and laces. The suspect also appears to have neck and arm tattoos.

An officer on patrol in the area noticed the glass door to the front of a business had been shattered. Money had been taken from the register. Detectives are investigating to determine whether the recent commercial breaks in the area are related.

An officer on patrol in the area noticed the glass door to the front of a business had been smashed by a brick. Nothing was noted missing, but there were similar breaks in Brighton around the same time with the same MO. The incidents may or may not be related at his time.

MV Accident:

Occurred at 6:30 PM on 8/27 – Kent St./Aspinwall Ave.

A vehicle traveling east on Aspinwall Ave. collided with a vehicle traveling south on Kent St. Due to conflicting accounts from the witnesses it is unclear who had the right of way and who was at fault. Significant damage occurred to both vehicles as well as to a tree, a street sign, and private property of the owner of the home in front of which the accident occurred. The driver of one vehicle was transported to the hospital.

Occurred at 4:56 PM on 8/27 – Horace James Rotary

A driver entering the Horace James Rotary was struck from behind by another vehicle. A passenger in the first vehicle was transported to the hospital, and the driver of the second was issued a citation for following too closely.

Occurred at 3:49 PM on 8/26 – Lee St.

An 18-wheeler traveling in the left lane on Lee St. swerved and struck a motor vehicle traveling in the right. The vehicle suffered serious damage and was towed, and the 18-wheeler suffered minor front bumper damage. There were no reported injuries.

An officer on patrol observed a motor vehicle pass his stationary position going very quickly. By matching the speed he was able to determine it was traveling 60 mph in a posted 35 mph zone. The operator was also observed failing to stay within marked lanes. A motor vehicle stop was initiated. After conducting further investigation, the operator was determined to be Operating Under the Influence.

Tropical Storm Update

From NSTAR, the following areas are without power:

286 customers at Welland Road. Status: partially completed

326 partial - Newton St (NSTAR lists this area as Chestnut Hill, some homes may be in Newton). Status: partially completed.

All police cruisers have cleared downed wires.

A full compliment of tree crews (12) are still working, and 122 trees or significant portion of trees have fallen. There are thousands of limbs and branches throughout the town.

Storm Impact update, 5:00PM

Brookline Emergency Management Team has released the latest data from the effects of Irene. As of 5:00PM Police responded to over 140 calls for service since 0800 hrs. 106 trees or limbs have fallen in town and we currently have 12 cruisers standing by downed wires. DPW crews with tree crews are busy cleaning up.
Power is out in the Newton St, Cypress St and "Pill Hill" areas of town.
NSTAR has a list of 13 locations in Town that have been determined as priority sites. NSTAR has responded to the top five locations. They are doing the best they can, but they have approximately 175,000 customers without service system wide.
