On Friday evening, the 26th day of July 2013, the Town of Brookline had a suspicious fire that totally engulfed the residence at 71 Spooner Rd. burning it to the ground. The house was vacant and unoccupied at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
The State Fire Marshall conducted an investigation into the cause of the fire and determined that the fire was incendiary in nature. A criminal investigation was begun by the Brookline Police Department resulting in a suspect, believed to be involved in the cause of the fire, being identified.
This morning, the first day of August 2013, an arrest warrant was issued by the Brookline Municipal Court for a Steven J. McCann of 241 Perkins St. Jamaica Plain, Ma. a white male with a date of birth of 06/28/1984. He was arraigned at his hospital bed at the Brigham and Woman’s Hospital early this afternoon. He is believed to have sustained injuries, while setting fire to the dwelling on Spooner Rd. He is charged with the following crimes: 1) Arson of Dwelling House, 2) Arson of Dwelling House (unoccupied), and 3) Burning of a Building to Defraud Insurer.
